Paediatric Moving and Handling

Description
This course introduces the problems associated with caring for children and young people needing assistance with moving or who use a wheelchair and offers the opportunity to practice up to date techniques and explore strategies for the safer handling of children and young people.
Impact Statement
By the end of the course, participants will have:
  • Reviewed spinal anatomy and biomechanics to enable staff to understand the importance of back care in the workplace and in all aspects of daily life
  • Considered the risks of low level/floor working and potential solutions
  • Discussed appropriate legislation and, where relevant codes of practice, and their relevance to the assessment of children and young people needing assistance when moving or being moved
  • Explored the importance of balanced decision making with regards to equality for children and young people with care needs and / or disability and discussed the importance of promoting independence
  • Considered the dangers of unsafe methods to children, young people and staff
  • Discussed and participated in a range of current techniques and strategies for working with children and young people requiring assistance with mobility
  • Practiced using a range of large and small handling equipment designed to aid transferring children and young people in the paediatric setting in line with current accepted good practice
  • Explored various unexpected situations and considered solutions to problems such as falling, and dealing with a fallen person
