iHV Fathers & Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Champions Training Programme
Participants will:
  • Gain skills to improve the experience and mental health care that fathers access and receive during the perinatal period
  • Develop their mindset and skills required to effectively engage and successfully work in partnership with fathers to foster good paternal, infant, and family mental health
  • Be equipped to deliver training, influence stakeholders and services around the needs of fathers, identify local gaps in services, and improve support available
  • Understand the importance of good mental health to support the transition to parenthood
  • Reflect on the role of the father in the context of today’s society and how this can impact on engaging with services
  • Explain the effects and impact of paternal mental illness on the father, partner, the developing fetus-infant-child across the life-course, including the father-infant and wider family relationships
  •  Communicate the wide range of perinatal mental health conditions and be able to recognise paternal mental illness
  • Understand some of the challenges and risks in identifying and supporting families affected by paternal mental health problems, including stigma, drugs and alcohol, cultural considerations, domestic violence and abuse, and safeguarding concerns
  • Identify and be clear about their responsibilities in relation to paternal mental health, including the need for timely referral, appreciating how their role fits with others along the perinatal care pathway
  • Identify simple strategies that can influence practice, to improve paternal mental health and develop father[1]inclusive services
  • Articulate the role of the iHV Fathers and PMH Champion and identify local opportunities to build advocacy for fathers’ perinatal mental health
This training is for anyone working with babies or young children, young people, parents or families.
You should have a -
  • A passion for perinatal and infant mental health and opportunities to  share this
  •  A desire to improve the experiences and mental health care that fathers 
    receive in the perinatal period
  •  Existing knowledge of perinatal and infant mental health (through completion of iHV PIMH programme ideally)
  • Skill in creating, facilitating and supporting a positive learning environment
  •  Ability to organise and deliver a cascade of the Fathers and PMH  awareness training package
