**SEND: Diversifying Communication & Interaction**
This in person classroom based training is delivered by Kerry Murphy, who has lived experience of neurodivergence and disability. This course reframes communication and interaction beyond the limits of speech and language “deficits.” Drawing on the concept of communication identity, the Double Empathy Problem, and myths such as the “word gap,” participants will examine how to affirm and expand the ways children express themselves. The session focuses on practical strategies for attuned interaction and inclusive communication practices that validate diverse voices.
This course equips participants with knowledge & skills to
- critically examine how communication is often narrowly defined in early years practice and the risks this poses for neurodivergent children
- explore neurodiversity-affirming approaches tocommunication, including attunement, multimodal expression, and relationship-based interaction
- develop strategies to create inclusive environments where diverse communication identities are recognised, valued, and supported
