Oracy Matters: Let's talk about it!
An exciting opportunity to be a part of a Greenwich Primary and EYFS collaborative focus on oracy.
Oracy is a powerful tool for learning, empowering a community of learners who can articulate their thoughts and engage in meaningful conversations.  We know that oracy can support social mobility and be a compelling vehicle for closing the achievement gap for disadvantaged pupils, equipping all children with essential skills for life.
Beginning with this dynamic 1-day conference, we will explore why oracy matters, what makes a high-quality oracy education and approaches to implementation across the curriculum.  There will be additional opportunities for participants to engage in twilight sessions over the next academic year, supporting the development of an oracy project in their own schools through networking with other colleagues across Greenwich.
We are incredibly fortunate that Beccy Earnshaw - founding CEO of Voice 21 and the UK's oracy education charity - has agreed to support us in this exciting, ongoing work.
The day will include:
  • A key-note speech by Beccy Earnshaw: Why oracy matters in our schools, especially for our disadvantaged pupils.  Beccy will provide us with a framework to support and challenge our thinking about how to implement a high-quality oracy curriculum.
  • Charlotte Hacking: Developing Book Talk in our Classrooms.  Charlotte will explore how to use literature to help pupils find their voice.
  • Rob Dunbabin, Headteacher Cardwell Primary School: Implementing a whole school approach to paired and collaborative talk through Kagan structures.
  • Rachel Hogarth Smith, Headteacher Rachel McMillan Nursery School in partnership with East London Early Years Stronger Practice Hub: Increasing the frequency of high-quality interactions between practitioners and children.
  • Round table discussions and action planning throughout the day, supported by Beccy Earnshaw.
Beccy Earnshaw: Charity Leader and education social entrepreneur - founding CEO of Voice 21 and schools NorthEast.
Charlotte Hacking: Learning and Programme Director CLPE
The East London Early Years Stronger Practice Hun: Fliss James and Melissa Pendergast
Practitioners will:
  • have a clear understanding of what high-quality oracy education is
  • leave with practical strategies to use in school for the implementation of a structured and progressive approach to improving oracy across the curriculum.
Headteachers; Senior Leaders; Primary English Leads; EYFS Leads; Inclusion Leads; Pupil Premium Leads; Teachers with an interest in developing oracy in their classrooms.
Secondary colleagues welcome.

*Curriculum & Teaching*

This session will explore developing and delivering a curriculum which embeds the ethos of challenge, promoting curiosity and effective learning for children in our settings.

Understanding why we, as practitioners, are doing what we are doing and being able to confidently assess the impact of that learning for children is key to their development and progression.

The characteristics of effective teaching and learning will be explored to support practitioners in identifying, scaffolding and celebrating opportunities for learning in line with the EYFS.

The session will also explore supporting children with SEND in settings to ensure all children are reaching their fullest potential in these crucial early years.
